Rukbat, the Visions of the Past Returning Male Red Star Radiant
It takes a special kind of person to abandon everything they’ve ever known and strike out into the unknown. The brave souls who first settled Pern were precisely that kind of person- and some small spark of their pioneering spirit lives on in Rukbat.
Rukbat is an explorer first, scholar second, guardian third. A deeply curious creature, he’s rarely satisfied with surface-level explanations. Merely knowing is not enough. He wants to understand, to truly comprehend why things are the way they are- and then he wields that information like the weapon it is. No matter how obscure a tidbit might be, Rukbat will find a way to wring an advantage out of it, and he’ll put it to damn good use keeping the weyrd and its occupants safe. Never is this tendency towards protectiveness more prominent than when Threadfall looms on the horizon. Always a hard worker, he throws himself into pre-Fall preparations with a zeal that’s awesome to behold. Reconnaissance, ferrying messages, drafting duty rosters- no chore is too big or too small for this Radiant. He takes to any appointed task with boundless enthusiasm and determined cheer, buoying the spirits of those around him with humorous mental imagery and surprisingly accurate vocal mimicry. It’s only when the waiting ends and the fight is joined that Rukbat’s third and final role in life comes into play. He’s a terror of the skies when turned loose mid-Fall, fiendishly agile and almost frighteningly fearless in his pursuit of the enemy. After all, he’s a phoenix. What kind of phoenix fears death? Not this one, that’s for certain!
Much like the star he was named for, Rukbat is, without a doubt, a very red phoenix. A supernova burns at the core of his being, cherry-red gouts of star-stuff whirling out across his body to fade into the deeper crimson of his wings. Thin, linear striations of near-black etch the flame of his back and wings, the pattern never quite the same from one resurrection to the next. Those familiar with Thread might recognize those markings: they’re uncomfortably similar to the scars left by Thread-scoring. As is common for Red Star phoenixes, clumps of inert Thread occasionally fall from Rukbat’s wings, a prospect that greatly distresses him.
Bonded 3.4.22 as part of Threadfall: Part 2.
